Redefining Cleanliness Standards Across the Industry

Many of our FedRooms hotel brand partners have launched brand specific cleanliness and disinfection programs to keep travelers safe amidst the COVID-19 health crisis.

Hilton’s CleanStay program, partnering with the Mayo Clinic, includes a seal to indicate when a room has been deep-cleaned, new cleaning and occupancy limits for fitness centers and a check-list of 10 high-touch areas that will receive extra disinfection.

IHG has chosen to partner with the Cleveland Clinic through the Clean Promise initiative, which also includes “Clean Champions” designated to navigate the new environment and help on-property teams deliver consistent cleanliness standards.

With health and cleanliness in the spotlight around the world, the hotel industry as a whole has also redefined cleaning standards across all major brands. Industry leaders worked in conjunction with public health experts this spring to help develop the Safe Stay Initiative, released recently by the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) as a comprehensive set of enhanced industry-wide hotel cleaning standards. Hotels have always placed a high importance on cleaning standards. The Stay Safe Initiative, however, intends to ensure greater transparency and confidence throughout the hotel experience for travelers across all properties.

The standards address a number of topics including:

1.     Employee and Guest Health: Focusing on the frequency of washing hands, quality and placement of hand sanitizer, requirements for signage throughout high traffic areas of a property and reporting of any employee or guest health concerns.

2.     Employee Responsibilities: General advice on proper hand hygiene in accordance with CDC guidelines, sanitation training and consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

3.     Cleaning Products and Protocols: Frequent disinfecting of public spaces and communal spaces is now mandatory, along with high-touch areas of guest rooms and shared equipment. Traditional room service will be temporarily replaced with a no-contact delivery method.

4.     Physical Distancing: As recommended by the CDC’s guidelines, guests are advised to practice physical distancing by standing at least six ft. apart from other groups of people not traveling with them. Housekeeping will not enter a room during a stay unless specifically requested or approved, and the use of technology to reduce direct contact with guests at front desks is preferred where feasible.
