FedRooms evaluated property sustainability this year as a part of our annual RFP solicitation process

A Focus on Sustainability: FedRooms 2022 Program

Sustainability has become an increasingly key priority for the hotel industry in recent years.

According to Skift research cited in this Hospitality Net article, “83% of global travelers think sustainable travel is vital. In addition, according to Booking.com’s Sustainability Report 2021, 73% of travelers would be more likely to choose an accommodation if it has implemented sustainability practices.” Sustainable practices cover everything from a property’s energy and water consumption to waste elimination and the brand’s overall carbon footprint.

At FedRooms, we also evaluated sustainability this year as a part of our annual Request for Proposal (RFP) solicitation process. Here are some selected questions that we asked properties to address:

-  Has your hotel taken steps to reduce single-use plastics, such as removing plastic straws (except upon request for guests with disabilities), stirrers, and cotton buds?

-  Does your hotel engage in activities to protect & restore the natural environment in which it is located (i.e. trees planted, coral reef restored, etc.)?

-  Does your hotel have electric vehicle charging stations?

-  Do your hotel's food options include organic, Fair Trade, and/or sustainably-sourced ingredients?

-  Has your hotel or your parent company set or are planning to set a science-based carbon target?

-  What percentage of your energy comes from renewable sources?

These questions, in addition to many others not included in this highlighted list, reflect FedRooms’ forward leaning focus on property sustainability for our 2022 program. We plan to continue evaluating property responses to these questions for future program participation, with the goal of providing FedRooms travelers options to select hotels that prioritize sustainability.
